I do not own the right to this picture. Thank you Volkswagen.com.sg

Yeah. Didn’t realize how fast these were. 292hp @ about 3,300lbs and so stable. I can say this from seeing one up close, going flat out on a very narrow windy downhill road that had me reminiscing Nurburgring runs in gran turismo. It was shocking. It also made me realize how sh*t my stock suspension is and how I will definitely benefit from some 205s on my newly installed 15x7 wheels. To be honest it had me in a bad mood. I don’t like losing. I don’t like it. Even keeping in mind I didn’t go flat out, I didn’t know the road, and my na8 isn’t in the same league. Now I’m looking at coilovers and sway bars... I will get my revenge!

Anyways on to the update:

Kinja'd!!!

Upgraded from my factory Enkeis (15lbs) to some 10lb Advanti wheels and man do they feel better. I’d equate it to going from hiking boots to running shoes. Offset is perfect at +35. Says I need 1.2 negative camber or better to run 205/50s. I forget what I’m at and will prob get an alignment again and coilovers before new tires anyways. Also black because I’ve always wanted black wheels and they’re gorgeous.

Kinja'd!!!

Also upgraded to a fully countersunk 1lb Moddiction shift knob. Coming from a regular Voodoo knob weighing in at maybe 1/3 of that, I now see the light. A properly weighted shift knob is key. It has made shifting so much more consistent and smooth. Also it is lower by about almost an inch, which I like. Plus it looks so much more sleek.

Kinja'd!!!

Also a thank you to Astheticsinmotion for the recommendation of a broadway rear view mirror attachment. It gives me visibility back, as with my Sparco in I can’t really look behind me as I used to. You could imagine this makes parallel parking, lane changing, or even reversing out of a spot slightly nerve racking. It’s a learning curve with a change in the way I drive, but Broadway’s convex mirror lessens that curve. I got the 300mm, but just ordered the 270mm to compare. I’ll prob give the 300mm to my gf.

That’s it for now. Been busy with life things. How’s Oppo. Any recommendations for budget coilovers? Or other suspension advice?

I don’t know jack about suspension, but tell me about that mirror - can you notice how curved it is, does it distort your view? Did you ever find yourself misjudging where cars were around you because of it or is the bulging minimal?

Oh, and I love the shift knob, looks cool.

Thanks! The mirror has a minimal convex to it. It makes cars appear further away than they are (much more so than the stock mirror). It does not distort anything. Very clear. I’ll take a picture and add it. I didn’t have one to post initially.

The mirror reflects super bright. They’re designed for tinted windows, so expect to have much greater clarity through the rear view. Also they’re only like $10 on Amazon, which is nice. There’s a noticeable curve, but it’s high quality glass so the image has a uniform curve. After a day or two you get used to it. The 300mm flat mirror is great too. Basically just an OEM mirror but brighter and larger

Awesome! Glad you like the mirror. I need to order a new one (who steals a $10 mirror?!)

Some good sticky tires in 205 width should be the biggest step in getting you to a point where you can stay with almost anything in curvy sections. I think the general consensus is still that a billstein setup is the best choice on a budget (so basically unless you’re willing to spend $1700+ on coilovers). This link has all the details for sourcing the parts and setting everything up

You could buy a low-mid range coilover like the Flyin Miata, Tein, and similar brands... But if you can afford that you’re better off saving up for Xidas, Fatcat coilovers, and others in the next tier up.

Am I missing something between hp and bhp.

The U.S. Golf R is 292hp but the U.K. Golf R is 306bhp.

I’ve heard about the budget bilstien coils... I’ll have to look at that post more, but it seems to have a lot of information. Hopefully I’ll be able to understand it lol. I was looking at the fm Vmaxx coilovers... they seem to be very complete and not outrageous in price (under 800). How much does the budget bilstien set up end up costing? I’m on mobile currently, so it’s hard to read things that are in depth.

They stole your broadway? Dumb. That’s like the methhead who stole my change drawer in my tj when I had it. Was so irritated and confused. Had less than a few dollars in change and what use could they possibly have for a tj change drawer?

Also I think your right on the tires... I definitely was pushing the limits of my all season 195 toyos on a high speed blind downhill L shaped curve. F*ing tricky road. So narrow blind and not very smooth.

Hmm I honestly don’t know. I know there’s a difference in engine horsepower and wheel horsepower... maybe that. But difference should be more than that.

Seriously, grab some 200tw tires. I’ve done a lot to my Miata, but the jump from crappy all seasons in stock size to wide summer tires was by far the biggest performance upgrade. No question. With stock power levels in dry weather it will be almost impossible for you to hit the limits of grip driving on the street. Once I switched, I seem to recall being able to hit the gnarliest of twisty roads at 25mph(!!!) higher speed than before. And that was with stock suspension, and a blown shock no less.

The bilstein setup varies on price depending on exactly how you spec it and where you get the parts from. Lookup “better bilstein miataturbo.net”

I’ve heard a lot of great things about the vmaxx setup... And a lot of bad things. Longevity and durability seems to be a common concern. The warranty is good, but you still don’t want to have to take off and ship your coilovers to the manufacturer after a year. If it was my money, I’d save that $800 and put it towards one of the higher end setups that is universally praised by absolutely everyone that uses them. Vmaxx’s aren’t known for comfort, which is fine if you’re mostly interested in track and spirited driving. But.... There are also very few races won or records set by Miatas on Vmaxx’s. If I had the money I’d sell you my Xidas cheap so I could make room for electronically-controlled ones lol

I run 225 width 200tw tires on my lemons car (hancook RS4s.) I’m 90 percent sure they make tires in my size (225/45-15) for you miata guys and hoooly shit does my car stick. Like...its kind of hilarious how much faster i can corner than most of the cars i’m racing against.

Car is a piece of shit with no power, but man, does it get down in the corners. And its not because of fancy suspension, i’ve got cut springs on a 1978 pontiac sunbird with a live rear axle.

Tires man. All tire.

Yep, 225/45/15 on 15x9's is the most common street tire for boosted/swapped high hp Miatas, and probably the most common track size for N/A guys. I would love to jump up to 225's but I like having ZIII’s and RE71R’s in the 205 class... Not to mention spending $100 a tire is pretty nice!

Oh man. Wish you hadn’t said anything. I’ve been on winter tires for 5 months, and bald summers for at least that long before. Buying a new set of good tires is going to feel magical.

Wow. You’re just cutting through them like it’s nothing curve after curve. Where is this? Oh and I love the beetle!

Damn I didn’t know that about the vmaxx. Hadn’t looked much in to them yet. I’ll look up the better bilstien set up. And do more research. But damn you got xidas? Here those are awesome. Though on my budget, I can’t swing new ones just yet. Though if you do want to sell hit me up! I’m not quite in he market for the suspension yet (unless I do go a cheap route). But yeah I’m the kind of person that likes to buy once, so unless cheap is also awesome quality and performance, I won’t do it.

Also you’ve sold me on tires, I’m used to running all seasons here cause of the snow... Though I guess now I have 2 sets of wheels so I could put my toyos on the enkeis and run with new 205s in the summer. And that would make sense for sure. I’ll look in to how much 200tw will cost.

Alright I’m sold on tires haha. I guess what has held me back on grippy tires is losing some playability in drifting. Though I only do that for the most part when it rains, cause tire wear (and other wear).

Heh, i feel you man, i desperately need to replace the tires on my street car.

The video was me at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma a couple of months ago. Its a crazy track, i practiced on Forza for a bit before driving down there (i’m from Seattle) but man....i still didn’t expect that much elevation change and that amount of...blindness.

Anyway i’ve run 2 races on the RS4's now and one on an old set of RS3's. I can’t speak to how long they’ll last for street duty, but i’m pretty impressed with them from a performance driving standpoint.

I also need to get out and just buy an NA (or maybe NB) one of these days. I’ve basically kicked the miata ownership can down the road. I’ve never been a big fan in terms of looks/idea, but the truth is, the car is simply too good to ignore. I’m pretty sure i’m not going die having never owned one, because i like driving them way too much.

Oh, heh, speaking of Miatas, there was an NA at my race piloted by none other than Mr Dave Coleman, father of the 4th gen (can we call him that? I’m calling him that.) It was both utter garbage and stupid fast. Which...yeah i guess makes sense.

Bhp(Brake Horsepower) is measured without any load on the engine, how they measure that I don’t know. I think they get the measurement more with math and not a dyno. Hp is measured on a dyno, which requires the engine to be under load, so that is why the number is usually lower.

Cheers for that.

Bloody hell. I was just starting to get my head around PS,

Apparently PS is the same as hp (which helps me out a little),

Europe and Australasia use kW.

So a PS or hp is 98.6% of a single bhp,

and a kW/kilowatt is equal to 1.34bhp.

Make it stop.

Between the U.S. using old imperial, the U.K. using newer imperial and metric and Europe and most of the world using metric. Add all the power ratings, it’s enough to make someone go, ‘you know what, I’ll ruddy walk’.

According to APR Tuning , the actual crank output is 294 and the wheel output is 258. It is entirely possible the EU tuning is slightly hotter, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time.

That said...it is stupidly quick if you have the DSG.

I like the Vmaxx, it was by far the best choice in that price range. But yeah tires and front sway bar were more important. I plan to eventually upgrade to xidas or FM Fox setup. But it is noticeable that my STi is a “comfort cruiser” in comparison.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I went on a Canyon run with a fellow Oppo in a golf r. Even though it was uphill, I left him in my dust in my Miata. Granted I was driving at 11/10ths on 200tw summers and I knew the road well. So it wasn’t a fair comparison lol.

How would that make ME feel better? Haha. Corners I wasn’t too far behind really. Those straights I would have been no match even had I went all out. Fast car. Doubt it was stock.

But nice job beating one. Now I want to meet up and see how I compare to you guys! Prob won’t be out west any time soon tho :/
